In a new twist to the circumstances surrounding pop star Michael Jackson’s death, it has emerged that his “drug-riddled” body may have been lying in his bedroom for more than an hour before help arrived, a British tabloid claimed on Sunday, quoting what it sensationally described as a “bombshell” ambulance report.

It said the report made on a comprehensive official form showed that Jackson was clinically dead along before paramedics arrived at this Los Angels home.

The revelation contradicts claims by Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray that the singer had a faint pulse when the ambulance came.

The News of the world, which reported the claim, said that Steven Hoefflin, a close friend of Jackson had “confirmed” its details.

“I’ve sp0oken to a chief in the fire department who told me Michael was dead when they arrived. He had no pulse and was not breathing. They gave him an electro-cardio-gram, but he was flatlined. They say he even had lividity, which meant the blood had sunk to the back, indicating that his heart had stopped a couple of hours earlier. This is the most important aspect of the report, as it means he must have been dead for over an hour, or probably longer,” Dr. Hoefflin was quoted saying.

The report, the newspaper said, was completed more than seven weeks ago, but was kept from the public by the police.

The 50-year –old King of pop died of a heart attack on June 25 after taking a cocktail of prescription pills. According to his Physician Dr. Murray, the singer was unconscious, but still had a faint pulse and the body was warm when he walked into Jackson’s bedroom.

Prince William and his girl friend Kate Middleton have reached “an understanding” that their eight year relationship will culminate in marriage by 2011, a media report said on Sunday.

“Done deal”

While marriage is a “done deal” between Prince William and Ms.Middleton, both 27, it is not expected till 2011 at the earliest, the News of the World reported, quoting well-placed sources in the royal family. The plan is that by the time the queen celebrates her diamond jubilee in 2012, Ms.Middleton will be on the palace balcony by her side as a full-fledged princess.

Insiders say the prince and his key advisers, including his father prince Charles, have a route map to the altar in place, with Ms.Middleton, at its heart.

Ms.Middleton is secure in the knowledge that the secret pact has already been made, and the palace blueprint for the future, creating the prince and princess of Wales, is in place.

The failure of Kharif crop in Gulbarga district will have a disastrous impact on the foodgrain production, particularly pulses, in Karnataka.

Gulbarga, popularly known as the “pulses granary of Karnataka” because of the large area under pulses cultivation, is experiencing drought owing to the failure of rain resulting in crops of major pulses, including red gram, black gram and green gram, failing this year. While the cultivation of short-duration green gram and black gram has been ruled out this year following lack of rain in June and July, red gram, which is known for its drought-resistant qualities, too has failed owing to extended dry spells.

Hundreds of villagers in China’s Shaanxi province stormed a lead smelting plant on Monday after it emerged that more than 600 children in two villages had taken ill with lead poisoning.

Monday’s incident is the latest in a number of recent cases of public unrest caused by environment pollution by factories in China’s provinces. While the government has in recent years begun to strengthen its environmental pollution laws, violations are still widespread at the provincial level.

Officials said on Monday the Dongling Lead and Zinc Smelting Group in central China’s Shaanxi province was responsible for poisoning at least 615 children in two villages near the township of Chagqing located near its plant. Officials found that lead content in the water and soil in surrounding areas was dangerously high.

Out of the 615 children who had taken ill with lead poisoning, 166 were in a serious condition and admitted to local hospitals. Officials said in some cases the lead content found in their blood was more than four times safe levels. “The medical test by doctors showed that for 20 out of 30 children the lead in blood was excessive, and 10 had more than 200 mg of lead per litre of blood,” Zhang Yongxiang, a local villager, told the State run China Daily newspaper. The normal lead content in blood is between 0 and 100 mg per litre. “One girl was taken to a hospital because her lead content was 306 mg,” he said.

While environmental laws have been strengthened at the central level, enforcement at the local level remains week, and many say influential companies, which often enjoy close relationships with local governments, escape strict enforcement. It emerged on Monday that Dongling had even passed emission standards tests and inspections conducted by local authorities.

Another high-profile case last year saw more than 3 lakh children fall ill after consuming milk powder tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. Later, investigations found that the Sanlu Company, China’s largest dairy producer, had for months covered up tests which had found its milk products to be unsafe. It also emerged that Sanlu had close ties with the provincial government in Hebei where the company was based.

Next month, the first ever environmental protection lawsuit filed against a government body in China on behalf of residents will be heard in Guizhou province. Usually, affected residents receive little compensation given the weakness in enforcement of environmental laws. But a local municipal court last month, for the first time, accepted a public interest petition filed against the government for a construction project that polluted two water bodies.

“No matter what the conclusive is, we hope it will serve as a warning to government departments that they should fulfil their duty to protect the environment,” Liu Haiying, a judge at the Qingzhen municipal court in Guizhou told China Daily. “They need to gradually realise they are not only under the supervision of the Communist Party and other administrative departments, but also under the watch of citizens.”

High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Alok Prasad on Tuesday handed over to the U.N Resident Representative, Neil Buhne, the fourth consignment of relief goods from India meant for the war-displaced population in northern Sri Lanka.

The 600-tonne consignment, valued at over $3-million, arrived in Colombo on August8. It consists of more than 6,00,000 packages of grocery items, utensils, plastic mats, clothing materials including children’s clothing, footwear, jerry cans and personal hygiene items.

Most of the items are in enough quantity to cover the needs of 80,000 families, nearly the entire IDP population in the north. The Indian mission said New Delhi was appreciative of Colombo and the U.N. for facilitating distribution of materials to the war displaced.

“The Government of India hopes that the process of resettlement will continue apace. It reiterates its readiness to work with the Government of Sri Lanka in assisting the later to fulfil its commitment for early resettlement of all displaced families to their original habitat.”

Important contribution:

The U.N. said would distribute the materials in the coming weeks with particular focus on those returning to their homes under the government’s 180-day plan. “This contribution is extremely important now,” said Mr. Bhune.

Night work is very dangerous and more deadly when compared to the labor working during daylight hours. Doctor’s view is that working odd hours can make people fat and increase their risk for high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. Working night shift may also enhance a person’s risk for Obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Scientists suspect that overnight work is dangerous because it disrupts the circadian rhythm, the body’s biological clock. Not getting enough sleep makes your immune system vulnerable to attack, and less able to fight off potentially cancerous cells.

There is no security especially for girls. But now a day’s several studies have found that women working at night over many years were in fact more prone to breast cancer. people feel tired when taking up the night shift as they do not get quality sleep during day-time. People usually take a routine life such as getting up at 7.00 am having breakfast at 10.00 am, working, having lunch at 1.00 pm, taking a brief rest, working and socializing after 6.00 pm.This type of pattern would be disturbed.

Night work is one of the few reasons for the workers being murdered on the job. On the other hand, installing video cameras to record crimes, storing cash in safes, and even having security guards don’t appear to protect employees from deadly violence. Many times guards do more harm than good by mounting on the situations that might be defused with calm. The other disadvantages relates to the amount, time, and quality of sleep. People working in night shift seem to find 5 to 6 hours sleep. These people are out of touch with friends and daytime world. Another problem with shift work is that employees have little contact with human resources to resolve employment issues.

Most employees wait for instructions from higher ups before talking action even though they very well know that action is absolutely necessary. They also wait to be blessed with empowerment by superiors before exercising any authority. Even in areas that directly affects their own work output, they expect someone from above to initiate needed changes.

Why do they hesitate to act independently? They do not stand on their own two feet but on those of others probably out of fear of failure. Management experts view this dependence in higher management for everything as a sign of professional immaturity. But the sad part however is that we hardly realize the devastating impact this kind of responsibility avoidance has on the overall organizational productivity.

In a way even organizations promote this kind of professional immaturity albeit inadvertently. When a blaming culture exists in the organization it is only natural that employees avoid taking responsibility. Far often even managers display a similar professional immaturity and thereby fail to help their employee to grow. Understanding the importance of accepting responsibility is crucial for professional success.

To move forward in their careers employees must be willing to shoulder bigger responsibilities and also take ownership of activities assigned to them by displaying a proactive attitude. Leading by example you can successfully displace a blaming culture at least in your corner of the world. Fear of failure and rebuke often prevent people from taking up responsibilities. Therefore, give your team the necessary space to learn experiment and grow. Explain to them that it is okay to fail as long as they learn something from the experience and avoid making the same mistakes again. When the fear is removed from their minds they act independently and quite successfully too.

Freedom to use their discretion and creativity in fact works as an effective motivator and brings out the best from them. While assigning responsibilities to your employees you must also coach them on proper professional behaviour. This will help them to discharge their responsibilities independently without wasting time waiting for your approval at every juncture. Let them know that they should always focus on results and to achieve those results they must take action in time. They should be discouraged from dumping problems upwards and asked to come up with solutions. If they are in the habit of complaining about various issues teach them to work constructively to bring the issues to a closure.

Avoidance of responsibility is an all-pervasive problem often resulting in delayed action or even inaction leading to poor outcomes. But when you acknowledge the presence of this common menace and show willingness to become part of a solution, things will surely improve. You must take some time out to improve the professional maturity of your team in spite of your busy schedule. After all the ultimate responsibility of executing projects successfully rests on you!

Whenever the business world goes through a crisis the most debated topic is the issue of leadership. There is discussion on the kind of leadership that bring about such situation and the ideal leadership style that can solve the crisis or pre-empt it. Leadership is relevant to the present crisis because part of it was perpetrated by faults in leadership style at some companies in the centre of the crisis.

Clichéd phrases like ‘tough times call for tough leaders’, ‘competent leadership’, ‘emotionally intelligent leaders’ and the like do the rounds as the topic is debated and discussed in meeting, forums, websites and blogs. This brings us to the question as to what actually constitutes good leadership? And is there any answer at all to this question or it as complex as the issue of leadership itself.

The focus in the recent times has shifted to a ‘soft’ style in leadership thanks to denial goleman and his ‘emotionally intelligent’ leader. The ideal leader is someone who is charming, likeable, empathetic and has a high degree of self-control and self-awareness.

A leader is someone who leads rather than conteols; he motivates his staff to follow a vision or claims to have the charisma to lead his team to greater heights. Yet none of these definitions emphasise on the competency factor in leaders. The focus is more on the likeability factor.

So what is good leadership about and who better to answer them the employees themselves. A study carried out by the UK institute of leadership & management (ILM) in 2007 has found that people would rather work for a tough boss who delivers results rather than a lenient one. In a poll conducted on 1500 managers, the study discovered that while teamwork and focusing on people those who took tough and resolute measures to achieve results.

These results were echoed in another study done by the University of Chicago in the same year where people responded positively to a leader who was persistent and efficient than someone who was just approachable or flexible. As the ILM study found, employees prefer managers who have a real commitment to deliver rather than someone who places priority on being liked by employee at the cost of missing targets.

The top traits in a leader according to the surveys quoted above are perseverance, attention to detail, efficiency, analytical skills and setting high standards. The central finding of the study-employees preferred managers who got things done. Less importance was given to aspects like teamwork, soft skills, enthusiasm or flexibility. An empathetic or flexible leader can be effective but he also runs the risk of favouritism or indecisiveness if he displays these traits to the extreme.

A study by the Hay Group, a global management-consulting firm on management styles concludes, “…too much concern with relationships and popularity damages team productivity. Leaders become overly concerned with maintaining popularity and good relationships and fail to address under performance and make tough decisions.” “To maximize team performance, leaders must ask themselves: do my relationship support or detract from the direction of the team?”

This is not to undermine qualities like charisma or the like ability factor because they play a significant role in motivating followers to achieve goals. Building positive relations with the team cannot be totally negated while defining leadership. During uncertain times like now where emotions like anxiety and fear rule the roost in both leaders and the led, some amount of emotional intelligence on the part of leaders is imperative.

This will help them connect with their employees and counter the lower morale, disengagement, stress or resentment the workers might be experiencing. People skills are important and also a certain level of emotional maturity. This will help to foster cooperation and compromise between the leader and his team to jointly tide over the crisis. Tenacity and competence are important traits in a leader but equally critical is emotional maturity and self-awareness.

A true leader is someone who displays a judicious mix of these two sets of qualities cannot be used in isolation as the yardstick for assessing or choosing a leader. Today’s changing times calls for a leader who is efficient and conducts his business with an open and compassionate attitude.

Commercial banking in modern times is indispensable economic progress of a country. In fact, the functions of modern commercial bankers and their utility to the community are so enormous that we simply cannot afford even to imagine, let alone experience, the inconveniences we would experience if commercial banks are closed. A short strike of even one day the employees of commercial banks disrupts the entire economic activities in the country. All economic activities some directly while others indirectly-come to a standstill. It serves the community in numerous ways.

Thirdly, the banks exercise considerable influence on the level of economic activity through their ability to create money in the economy. Fourthly, through their lending policy, the banks can influence the course and direction of economic activity within the economy. Fifthly, the various utility within the economy. Fifthly, the various utility functions performed by the banks are of great economic significance for the economy.

The recession is taking its toll on the best of us. With the mounting economic distress, simply having a job seems like a blessing.moreover, being able to hold on to a job during a series of cost-cutting and layoffs forums a major triumph.

In fact, this tremendous pressure on job security is pushing people to work harder with gruelling hours and crazy schedules. They have no choice but to put their career first, and work/life balance has become the principle sacrifice at the altar of recession.

What most people fail to realize is that the constant battle for survival bring its own physical and emotional toll, making them a walking recipe for disaster. Gaining at least a semblance of balance between your work and the rest of your life is more important now than ever and is the only way to manage the chaos.besides; it will enable you to do your job better.

Yet, while striking a work/life balance was never easy, today’s challenging times have made the prospect harder than ever. This is not to say that you just cannot lead a full and rewarding personal life at all. There are lots of places to start once you realize the need to maintain a balance to outride the stress and tension.

Get priorities right: there will always be various things competing for your time and attention. You need to attend a meeting. Complete a project, instruct a subordinate, reply to your emails, and negotiate with a client and so on. Similarly, on the home front, you have to attend your son’s cricket match, help him with his homework, care for a sick parent, and spend some time with your spouse and also read that new book. These numerous demands pull you in different directions and scatter your attention, making it tough to get almost anything done.

Take an honest look and figure out what you really want and what you are willing to give up. Then either postpone or entirely eliminate the extra obligations that are counterproductive and wastefully eat into your time. This will free you for the more important tasks and let you focus on making the top priorities happen.

Use technology: numerous flexible options like telecommuting and flex-time have emerged that can make your working life infinitely easier. What’s more, the recession has made employers more amenable as they can conveniently cut costs and overheads.

So, check your company policy on the flexible options offered and remember that you will not lose anything by asking for accommodations. If your boss is different, explain that job-sharing or working from home at least on some days will make you more productive while letting you meet your personal responsibilities. Even if it entails a smaller pay cheque, the extra time can often compensate for the lost money.

Draw line: experts opine that there is no direct correlation between the number of hours you work and your chances of holding on to the job.so pause and reflect a while on both the choices and sacrifices you have made. There is no gripping compulsion to work longer hours and you should draw the line when it comes to your personal time. Schedule sufficient family time and keep your blackberry, laptop and other devices. Sacrilegiously off-limits. Explain to your boss that you will mostly be unavailable during weekends or will not take work home. Also, instead of working round the clock learn to work smarter by managing your tasks over a reasonable period of time.

Life outside work: never make the mistake of devoting yourself entirely to your work. It will ultimately reduce your productivity and overall satisfaction. Build a healthy network of family and friends that will work both as an outlet as well as a support system. You can also talk to different people in your circle and discuss tips on how they are managing to maintain a balance during this downturn.therefore, a mix of discipline and smart choices will enable you to free up at least a few extra hours in your life!
